I'm sitting outside the changing room of The Longpigs while
they are being interviewed. A wall not too far away prevents
me from seeing the owner of a pair of legs. A hand from the
same body appears and lays an empty pizza
box on the floor. A face appears. A face I recognise.
"Excuse me," I begin. "Weren't you playing
keyboards for The Longpigs on Big Breakfast the other morning?"
The attractive and polite Helen sits on the step opposite
to those that lead to the changing rooms. She informs me that
she only plays the keyboards for the band live. With a bit
of prompting she recollects the experience of the previous
night's gig in Norwich.
"It was pretty scary. I would be playing and I could
see all these faces looking out of the holes and gaps in the
walls. It was like playing in a crypt. Not to mention it was
packed. The ceiling was damp. Every so often I would have
to wipe the keyboard of the grey muck that fell from the ceiling."
The changing room's door opens and two people leave. I bid
Helen farewell and enter the room. There are more pizza boxes
and more faces that I recognise. So lads, tell me about the
Norwich gig.....
"There was moisture pouring off the ceiling," states
Simon. "Everyone was sweating. I quite like sweaty gigs
because it feels like you're giving out a lot."
"It was good," begins Crispin. "It was the
smallest one we were doing on this tour and it was excellent
fun but incredibly hot. At the end of it I thought I was going
to faint."
Cripsin impersonates the level of his exhaustion before continuing.
"It got more difficult to play because you were literally
covered in sweat and it probably ended rougher than it began,
but it was a great gig and I really enjoyed it."
